Terms you'll see in our quotes & contracts.
FOB (Free On Board)
The price of the goods loaded onto the vessel at the port of origin. Freight, insurance and destination charges are not included.
CIF (Cost, Insurance & Freight)
FOB price plus ocean freight and marine insurance to your destination port. Import duty and local port charges are still separate.
HS Code
The Harmonized System code used by customs authorities worldwide to classify goods and determine duty rates. Basmati and non-basmati rice typically fall under HS Chapter 10 (cereals), with specific subheadings by processing type.
LC (Letter of Credit)
A bank-issued payment guarantee commonly used in international rice trade, releasing payment once agreed shipping documents are presented.
Sella
Parboiled rice — paddy that is soaked, steamed and dried before milling, which changes texture and locks in more nutrients from the bran layer.
Broken %
The percentage of broken grains in a lot by weight, one of the key grading criteria buyers specify in a contract.
Head Rice / Head Rice Recovery
Whole, unbroken milled grains as a percentage of the paddy processed — a core efficiency and quality measure in milling.
Pre-Shipment Inspection
An independent inspection (e.g. SGS, Bureau Veritas) of the cargo before loading, confirming it matches the agreed specification.
